What Are UTM Coordinates? Zones and Meters

What are UTM coordinates? A global grid of zones measuring position in meters east and north. How to read UTM values and use them with parcel maps.

What are UTM coordinates? UTM, or Universal Transverse Mercator, is a coordinate system that divides the world into 60 north-south zones, each 6 degrees of longitude wide, and measures locations in meters east and north within each zone. Because it uses meters on a flat grid rather than angles, UTM is convenient for measuring distances and areas. It is widely used in topographic maps, GIS, field work, and some property and environmental records. The contiguous United States spans UTM zones 10 through 19. This page is general land-records background, not legal advice.

Reading a UTM coordinate

PartExampleMeaning
Zone15NZone number and hemisphere
Easting512345 mMeters east within the zone
Northing4321098 mMeters north of the equator

Eastings use a false origin of 500,000 meters at the zone’s central meridian, so all values are positive. Northings in the northern hemisphere measure from the equator.

UTM vs latitude and longitude

Latitude and longitude are angles on a globe. UTM is a projected grid, making distances simple to calculate within a zone. GIS tools convert between them.

UTM vs state plane

State plane coordinates are used for surveying and county GIS in most states, with smaller zones and higher accuracy. UTM is broader and common in federal and scientific data.

Datums

UTM coordinates must be paired with a datum, such as NAD83 or WGS84. Values for the same point differ between datums. See what NAD27 and NAD83 mean on a plat.

Zone boundaries

Points near zone edges can be expressed in either zone, but mixing zones causes errors. Projects that cross zones may use another system.

Using UTM with parcel maps

County GIS viewers may display coordinates in UTM or state plane. See how to use a county GIS viewer. UTM differs from the section, township, and range system used in legal descriptions.

Example

A wetland report lists a sample point at Zone 16N, Easting 402,500, Northing 4,650,300, NAD83. Entering these values in a GIS converts them to latitude and longitude, placing the point in a parcel in northern Illinois.

Military grid

The Military Grid Reference System is based on UTM, adding letters for grid squares.

Accuracy

UTM is accurate for most mapping, but surveyors may prefer state plane for legal boundary work.

Where you will see UTM

USGS topographic maps print UTM grid ticks along their edges, and many federal datasets, such as wetland and environmental records, list sample locations in UTM. Hikers and search and rescue teams use UTM because distances on the grid are easy to estimate: each 1,000 meters of easting or northing is one kilometer. Parcel data from counties is less often in UTM, so conversion is usually needed.

Converting coordinates

Free online tools and GIS software convert between UTM and latitude and longitude. Always enter the correct zone, hemisphere, and datum.

Bottom line

UTM coordinates locate points in meters east and north within 6-degree zones worldwide. They are common in topographic maps and GIS. Always note the zone and datum when using UTM data with parcel maps. Explore parcels via the Platbookmapper map.

What are utm coordinates FAQ

What are UTM coordinates?

A grid system measuring meters east and north within zones.

How many UTM zones are there?

60 zones worldwide.

What UTM zones cover the U.S.?

Zones 10 through 19 for the contiguous states.

Is UTM the same as state plane?

No, state plane uses smaller zones.

Do UTM coordinates need a datum?

Yes, such as NAD83 or WGS84.
