Town assessor search patterns

Coastal towns often expose flood and harbor layers; western hill towns may publish simpler PDF or basic web maps that still identify tax lots.
Property here is metes-and-bounds and recorded plans—not PLSS sections. Parcel IDs (map-block-lot or unique IDs) are invented per town. Boston and larger cities run substantial GIS portals; smaller towns may route through regional planning commission viewers—confirm the assessing town is correct.
Web lot lines are not surveys. Use recorded plans or a licensed surveyor for legal work.
If a small town only posts PDFs, still start from the official town domain rather than a scraped mosaic. Larger cities expose robust GIS—use parcel ID when street aliases conflict. Platbookmapper remains a county-indexed link list.
Regional planning viewers can help when a town outsources GIS, but the assessing town’s ID remains the key. Cross-check the tax bill header every time.
