Dane County has Madison at its center — the state capital and home of the University of Wisconsin — ringed by fast-growing suburbs and some of Wisconsin’s most productive dairy and crop land. The county’s DCiMap viewer is the official public GIS for finding parcels, owners, and the layers that tell you what can happen on them.
DCiMap in brief
DCiMap is Dane County’s interactive map. It shows parcel boundaries and property information, aerial imagery, and a range of layers such as zoning, floodplain, wetlands, and shoreland. It covers cities, villages, and towns throughout the county.
We list it on the Dane County row of our Wisconsin directory, and you can reach it from the Platbookmapper national map too.

Dane County plat book: the 2026 edition and free historic scans
Dane County produces its own plat book, and the 2026 edition is out. When we checked, it was $40 from Dane County Planning and Development in the City-County Building, with mail orders available. Besides ownership, it shows county roads, parks, public lands and outdoor recreation. Plenty of people search for a free Dane County plat book, and the free current option is DCiMap itself. For history, UW–Madison’s digital collections have full scans of the 1890 Plat Book of Dane County and the 1911 Standard Historical Atlas of Dane County. The UW State Cartographer’s Office also keeps a statewide guide to where Wisconsin plat books can be found.
The isthmus and the growing ring
Madison sits on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, with Lake Waubesa and Lake Kegonsa to the southeast. Around it are Sun Prairie, Fitchburg, Middleton, Verona, Monona, Stoughton, Waunakee, DeForest, McFarland, Oregon, and Mount Horeb. Epic Systems’ campus in Verona and the university and state government keep demand high, and farm fields at the edge of the suburbs are steadily turning into subdivisions. DCiMap is the easiest way to see which fields have been platted.
Zoning, tax map and who governs a parcel
Wisconsin has three kinds of municipalities: cities, villages, and towns. Cities and villages zone their own land. Dane County zoning applies in towns that have adopted it, and towns also have their own comprehensive plans. Cities and villages can have extraterritorial review near their borders. So the first step with any parcel is to note its municipality, then check the right zoning map. Our zoning overlays guide explains how to read these layers.
How to find property lines in Dane County
- Click the parcel in DCiMap and note the parcel number, the municipality and the legal description.
- Get the recorded plat or certified survey map from the Register of Deeds. Many rural Wisconsin lots were created by certified survey maps.
- Find the corners on the ground and compare them with the survey’s dimensions.
- For fences, additions near a setback, or disputes, hire a surveyor.
The PLSS grid under everything
Like most of the Midwest, Dane County is laid out in Public Land Survey System townships and sections. Rural legal descriptions reference them, and many roads follow section lines. Knowing a parcel’s section, town and range makes it easy to cross-reference plat books and older records, and to line up an 1890 plat page with today’s DCiMap view.
Dane County acreage map: farms, the Driftless edge and hunting ground
Dane County is one of Wisconsin’s leading agricultural counties, with dairy and crop farms across the east and north. Western Dane County lies at the edge of the Driftless Area, the unglaciated region of ridges and coulees, where parcels follow hills and valleys and hunting land is popular. Much farmland is zoned for farmland preservation, which limits non-farm development. If you are looking for a rural homesite, check the zoning and ask whether the town allows splits.
Turkey and deer hunters asking for permission in western Dane can use DCiMap or the plat book to put a name on the land. Click the parcel, note the owner, and ask. The Wisconsin DNR maps public hunting land separately.
Lakes, wetlands, floodplain, and shoreland
With several lakes, rivers, and many wetlands, Dane County regulates shoreland and floodplain areas closely. Lakefront parcels often have setback requirements and limits on clearing, and wetlands can reduce buildable area. Turn on these layers in DCiMap before you make an offer, then confirm specifics with the zoning office. See flood zones in parcel viewers for help reading flood layers.
Are Dane County parcel lines accurate?
They’re a solid reference for layers and neighbors, but a poor guide for a fence. DCiMap’s parcel lines are compiled from recorded documents, and older farm descriptions, lakeshore lots and parcels along wetlands are where the map and the ground most often disagree. Deeds and plats are recorded with the Dane County Register of Deeds. Assessments are handled by each municipality’s assessor. A Wisconsin licensed land surveyor determines boundaries. DCiMap not loading? Three quick fixes
First, reload in a private window to clear stale cached files. Second, allow pop-ups, because property details can open separately. Third, switch to a desktop browser for layer work. If the address itself has changed, the Dane County row of our Wisconsin directory has the current link.
Who uses DCiMap
University staff and students renting or buying near campus, families comparing suburbs, farmers expanding acreage, builders and developers, hunters in western Dane, surveyors, and title examiners. Residents also use it to follow proposed developments in their neighborhood.

Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or boundary disputes.
