East Baton Rouge Parish holds Louisiana’s capital, LSU and a web of bayous and rivers that shape where water goes in a storm. The parish now has five incorporated cities, including the newest, St. George. The East Baton Rouge Assessor GeoPortal shows every parcel among them.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Assessor publishes its map on GeoPortal, a platform used by several Louisiana parishes. The search panel finds parcels by owner, parcel ID, subdivision, township-range-section or street address. Map tools include identify, buffer, measure, drawing, printing and a search history, and a feedback form lets you report errors. Tutorial videos walk through the tools.

Layers include parcel dimensions, owner names, parcel numbers, lot and block labels, unpinned parcels, public land survey lines, city boundaries, agricultural soil classes and timber data. We link it from East Baton Rouge in our Louisiana directory, and the parish can be selected on our U.S. county and parish map.

The parcel ID on your assessment notice is the most reliable search, and direct links to a parcel record use the Assessor’s property number. Owner searches take the name as the Assessor lists it. The City-Parish also runs a property lookup that searches by address, subdivision, business or lot identification number. Tips:

How to find property lines in East Baton Rouge Parish

  1. Look for the legal description, lot and subdivision on the parcel record.
  2. Get the deed and recorded plat from the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court, which records conveyances.
  3. Walk the corners and look for iron rods, starting with the plat measurements.
  4. Louisiana licensed land surveyors can resolve fence and boundary questions.

Louisiana’s land records have French and Spanish roots, and some old tracts in the parish trace to colonial-era grants rather than the regular section grid. Those descriptions can be irregular, which is one more reason to rely on a survey.

Rivers, bayous and the 2016 flood

The Amite and Comite rivers flooded thousands of homes in the parish in August 2016, including many outside mapped high-risk zones. Flood zones and base flood elevations matter here, and so does a home’s flood history. Check the flood layer and ask the seller about past claims before you buy. Our guide to flood zones in a parcel viewer covers the basics.

Five cities and the parish

Baton Rouge, Baker, Zachary and Central were joined by St. George, which incorporated after a long legal fight, and the GeoPortal shows its boundary. The city of Baton Rouge and the parish share a consolidated government for many services. Zoning and permits depend on which city a parcel is in, so check the city layer before calling for a permit.

Acreage map and hunting permission

North of Zachary and east toward the Amite, parcels get larger and timber is common. The GeoPortal works as an acreage map there, and its timber and soil layers add detail. Tract owners are one click away, so ask them for permission before you hunt. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries lists public wildlife management areas and seasons.

Reassessment and exemptions

Louisiana assessors reappraise property on a regular four-year cycle, and new construction is added to the roll as it is completed. The homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of an owner-occupied home and must be filed by the owner. The Assessor’s office in Baton Rouge handles both, and its GeoPortal feedback form is the place to flag a mapping error. For tax bills, the parish sheriff’s office serves as tax collector in Louisiana. If a bill and the Assessor’s record disagree about exemptions or ownership, start with the Assessor, since the sheriff bills from the Assessor’s roll.

East Baton Rouge plat book

We turned up no current printed atlas for the parish. Recorded plats at the Clerk of Court are official, and the GeoPortal is free. In Louisiana the parish Clerk of Court is also the recorder, so deeds, mortgages and plats are kept in one office.

Is the East Baton Rouge GIS map accurate?

The GeoPortal is reliable for finding a parcel, but its lines are drawn for assessment. Old grants, bayous and subdivisions platted on paper decades ago can all shift lines. Before building or fencing, order a survey, and see assessor map versus survey.

GeoPortal not loading?

Give the map time to draw, then try the search again. If tools stop responding, clear the cache or switch browsers, and use the City-Parish property lookup as a backup. For the Northshore, see our St. Tammany Parish guide, or see the Louisiana parish GIS hub for all 64 parishes.
