Ottawa County has Lake Michigan dunes, Grand River bottomland, blueberry and dairy farms, and some of west Michigan’s fastest-growing suburbs. The county’s Property Mapping viewer and miOttawa’s property search work as a pair, and the county’s GIS department even publishes its own plat book.

Property Mapping and miOttawa

The Property Mapping viewer runs on Geocortex. It opens with a side panel for searching and an “I want to…” menu, plus tools for identify, measurement, labels and additional maps and apps. The miOttawa Real Property Search handles the record side. It searches by owner name, parcel number or address, shows property details, and links back to the GIS parcel map. You can also pay delinquent taxes or buy a tax search there.

Our Ottawa County page in the Michigan directory links the viewer. You can also select the county on the national map.

Michigan parcel numbers typically encode the county, the township or city, and the section, so nearby parcels share a prefix. Your tax bill shows the number. miOttawa can search active and inactive parcels, which helps when a lot has been split or combined.

Ottawa County plat book: county-published and historic

Ottawa County does things a little differently. Its plat book is produced by the Ottawa County GIS department, and MSU Extension says it is now sold only in electronic form through the county. Contact Ottawa County GIS for the current edition and price. For history, the 1876 Illustrated Historical Atlas of the Counties of Ottawa & Kent, Michigan is digitized on the Internet Archive. The Loutit District Library in Grand Haven posts individual Ottawa County pages, and the county’s MIGenWeb site has an index of 1876 landowners.

How to find property lines in Ottawa County

  1. Open the parcel and copy its legal description. Many rural parcels are aliquot parts of a section, and suburban ones are platted lots or site condominium units.
  2. Get the recorded plat or deed from the Ottawa County Register of Deeds.
  3. Look for iron corner markers. In lakeshore dunes, sand moves and markers can be buried.
  4. Hire a Michigan professional surveyor for fences, additions, or disputes.

Plat and data tools in the viewer

The Property Mapping toolbar includes plat and GIS data options along with its identify and measure tools. That makes it easy to jump from a parcel to recorded plat information. For people who need data rather than a map, the county GIS department also distributes GIS data. The department that makes the plat book also maintains the parcel layer, which keeps the map and the book consistent.

Is the Ottawa County GIS map accurate?

It is a detailed county GIS, but parcel lines are still drawn to fit imagery and recorded descriptions. Lakeshore lots, where the shoreline moves, and old farm descriptions are where the map and ground disagree most. The survey controls. See GIS versus a survey.

Ottawa County acreage map and hunting permission

Farms and woodlots fill the townships between Coopersville, Allendale and Hudsonville, and the Grand River corridor has wooded bottomland. Hunters use the viewer or the county plat book to identify owners and ask permission. For public land, the Michigan DNR’s Mi-HUNT map shows state land open to hunting. Lake Michigan dune land has special state protections, so check before planning anything near the shore.

From the lakeshore to the Grand River townships

Grand Haven is the county seat, while the county’s administrative offices are in West Olive. The lakeshore strip, from Grand Haven and Spring Lake down toward Holland, is dunes, beach homes and state parks. Inland, Allendale, Jenison and Hudsonville have filled in quickly around Grand Valley State University and the Grand Rapids suburbs. Farther east and north, Coopersville, Polkton and Chester townships remain agricultural. Each area uses the viewer differently. Lakeshore owners check setbacks, suburban buyers check subdivision plats, and farm families check acreage.

Zoning, shoreline and flood

Townships and cities set zoning in Michigan. Near Lake Michigan, parts of the shore are designated as critical dunes or high-risk erosion areas under state rules. The Grand River floodplain is worth checking too (flood layers explained).

Property Mapping not loading?

Geocortex viewers take a moment to load their splash screen and tools. If it stalls, refresh, clear the cache, or use miOttawa’s search and its link to the parcel map. The Michigan GIS hub lists all 83 counties, and our Grand Traverse County guide covers the northwest.
