Pennington County takes in Rapid City, a big piece of the Black Hills, and prairie out to the Badlands. That range — from city lots to pine-covered mountain tracts and ranch land — makes a good parcel map essential. The Rapid City and Pennington County public GIS map is the official interactive viewer.
RapidMap: the shared city–county viewer
Rapid City and Pennington County share a public GIS viewer built on Geocortex. It shows parcel boundaries, aerial imagery, addresses, and reference layers, and lets you identify a parcel and read its information. It covers the city and the rest of the county.
We link to it from the Pennington County row of our South Dakota directory and from the national map.

Rapid City and the Hills
Rapid City is the county seat and the gateway to the Black Hills. Box Elder, next to Ellsworth Air Force Base, lies to the east. Hill City, Keystone, and Rockerville sit in the Hills, with Mount Rushmore National Memorial near Keystone. Wall and New Underwood lie on the prairie, and part of Badlands National Park is in the county. Tourism, the air base, healthcare, ranching, and timber shape the economy.
Pennington County plat book: commercial maps and a 1946 atlas
For a printed or digital ownership map, Rockford Map Publishers lists Pennington County plat and parcel map products. RapidMap is the free, current alternative. Recorded plats come from the Register of Deeds. For history, the South Dakota State Archives holds a 1946 Pennington County atlas with township plats showing land ownership, which helps when you trace an old ranch or homestead. A Black Hills National Forest map is a smart companion on forest roads.
Pennington County acreage map: Black Hills forest parcels and hunting land
Much of the western county is Black Hills National Forest, and private parcels are scattered among public land, including old mining claims. Buyers look for parcels next to the forest for recreation and views. On the map, check how the parcel connects to a road; many Hills properties use private or Forest Service roads, and legal access is not always obvious. Wildfire risk and forest health are also real concerns in the Hills. See road frontage and right-of-way.
Hunters can use South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks’ public hunting atlas, including its Walk-In Areas on private land, for public access. Everywhere else, permission starts with the landowner named in RapidMap.
Old mining claims
The Black Hills gold rush left a legacy of patented mining claims, which can appear as oddly shaped, narrow parcels on the map. They may have unusual boundaries, access challenges, or title questions. If you are considering a claim parcel, pay extra attention to the legal description and have a title professional and surveyor review it.
How to find property lines in Pennington County
- Identify the parcel in RapidMap and note the parcel number and legal description, which may be a claim name, a lot or a section description.
- Pull the plat or deed from the Register of Deeds. Mining claims may reference old mineral surveys.
- Find the corners. In the Hills, claim corners can be old posts or stones.
- Hire a South Dakota licensed surveyor before you build, fence or buy an odd-shaped claim.
Reservoirs and lake-area parcels
Pactola Reservoir and Sheridan Lake, both in the central Hills, draw anglers, boaters, and cabin buyers. Much of the shoreline around them is national forest land, so private parcels nearby are often set back from the water rather than on it. On the map, check whether a “lake area” parcel actually touches the shore and how it reaches a public road. Nearby subdivisions may have road associations or covenants, which you can find in recorded documents at the Register of Deeds.
Prairie and ranch land
East of Rapid City, the county opens into rangeland and farmland. Ranch parcels are large and often follow section lines. Buyers use the map to compare tract sizes, check road frontage, and see neighbors. Water, wells, and fencing are key questions. Our measuring acreage guide and vacant land guide help with evaluating big tracts.
Flood, zoning and the tax map in brief
Rapid Creek runs through Rapid City, and the 1972 Rapid City flood led to lasting changes in how the city uses its floodplain, including greenway land along the creek. Canyon creeks in the Hills can rise quickly in heavy rain. Check floodplain layers before you buy near water; our flood zones guide helps.
Rapid City zones land inside its limits, and Pennington County’s planning and zoning office covers the unincorporated county. Call whichever applies with the parcel number in hand. The property classification on the assessment record is for taxes, not zoning.
Is the Pennington County GIS map accurate?
RapidMap’s own disclaimer answers this: its maps don’t represent a legal survey and are meant for broad planning. That’s the right expectation. Patented mining claims, forest inholdings and section-line ranch land are where RapidMap lines and field evidence tend to part company. Deeds and plats are recorded with the Pennington County Register of Deeds, and the Director of Equalization handles assessments. A South Dakota licensed land surveyor sets boundaries. Browse the South Dakota county GIS hub for neighboring counties like Meade, Lawrence and Custer.
Tips, and quick fixes if RapidMap won’t load
- Rural parcels may have no street address; use the parcel number or legal description.
- Check neighbors: a parcel bordering national forest may have great access to recreation but limited road access.
- Winter conditions in the Hills can make some roads difficult; plan visits accordingly.
RapidMap is a Geocortex viewer. When it hangs on the loading bar, a refresh usually clears it. Pop-up blockers can stop parcel reports, and phones struggle with its layer list. The Pennington County row of our South Dakota directory keeps the current link.
Who uses the map
Rapid City homebuyers, military families at Ellsworth, cabin and recreational land buyers in the Hills, ranchers, builders, surveyors, and title examiners. Tourism businesses use it for property research, too.

Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or boundary disputes.
