Plat Map Free: Find the Official County Map
A plat map is often free from the county recorder or GIS office. Here is how to open the official map instead of paying a copy site.
Platbookmapper is an Amazon Associate. If you buy through an Amazon link on this page, we earn a commission. The link is a product, not the county map.
A plat map free of charge is usually sitting on a county website. The recorded plat is the drawing filed when a subdivision was created. The parcel viewer is the assessor's map of lots as the county taxes them today. Both can be free. Neither one is a survey.
Where a free plat map actually lives
Counties publish these records themselves. A recorder or register of deeds keeps the recorded plat. The assessor or GIS office keeps the parcel viewer. Paid "instant plat" sites resell a copy of that same public information, often with a login wall in front of the download.
How to open it
- Go to the Platbookmapper home page and search for the county.
- Open the official GIS or parcel viewer linked there. Platbookmapper does not draw the lot lines. It sends you to the county.
- Search by site address or parcel number. If you need the filed subdivision drawing, look for the plat book, cabinet, or recorded-document link on that same county site.
What "free" does not include
The map on screen is an assessment layer. It can be off by feet. It will not settle a fence, a setback, or a boundary fight. For that, hire a licensed surveyor and read the recorded plat and deed together.
If a site asks you to pay before it will show the county's own map, go back to Platbookmapper and open the official viewer instead.
Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey.
