St. Louis County, Minnesota, is enormous — the largest county by area east of the Mississippi River, reaching from Duluth on Lake Superior north to the Canadian border. It holds a port city, the Iron Range mining towns, and thousands of lakes. The county’s Land Explorer map is the official way to find a parcel anywhere in that expanse.
Not to be confused with St. Louis County, Missouri — this guide is about northeastern Minnesota. Our Minnesota directory row for St. Louis County links to the right viewer, and you can confirm the location on the national map.
Land Explorer at a glance
Land Explorer is the county’s public web map. It shows parcel boundaries with owner and property information, aerial imagery, and a set of reference layers such as roads, lakes, and public lands. Because so much of the county is forest and water, the imagery and public-land layers are just as useful as the parcel lines.
Search Land Explorer by PIN, address or owner
- Open Land Explorer in a new tab.
- Search by parcel ID, owner, or address. Many rural parcels have no address, so parcel ID is the best key.
- Click the parcel to see owner, acreage, and property details.
- Turn on aerial imagery and lakes to judge shoreline, road access, and cover.
- Switch on public land or ownership layers if available to see what surrounds the parcel.
- Record the parcel ID and a screenshot.
Land Explorer not loading?
Land Explorer offers several themed maps, such as Cadastral, Tax-Forfeited Land Sales, Zoning and Land Use, and Recreation. If one hangs, reload it or open a different theme, and allow pop-ups for property reports. The Minnesota directory row for St. Louis County keeps the current entry point.
Duluth, the Range, and the North Woods
Duluth is the county seat, climbing the hillside above Lake Superior and the Twin Ports harbor. Hermantown and Proctor border it. North of Duluth, the Iron Range towns — Hibbing, Virginia, Eveleth, Mountain Iron, Gilbert, and Babbitt among them — grew up around iron ore and taconite mining. Farther north, Ely, Tower, Cook, and Orr sit near the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs country, where the market is cabins, resorts, and recreational land.
The St. Louis County plat book: print, app and a free 1916 edition
This is one of the counties where a real plat book still exists, and the county publishes it itself. The Land Atlas & Plat Book was last updated in 2024. It shows tax parcel boundaries, owners of record and estimated acreage for unplatted land. When we checked, the printed book was $30 at county Auditor offices, with mail orders handled through the Auditor’s office in Virginia. A GeoPDF version for the Avenza Maps app works offline with your phone’s GPS, which is handy on logging roads without signal. For history, the University of Minnesota’s Borchert Map Library has put a digitized 1916 State of Minnesota plat book online that covers St. Louis County. The county surveyor’s Survey Explorer has scans of older recorded surveys.
St. Louis County acreage map: hunting land and landowners
Hunters and outdoor buyers look for parcels bordering state forest, county-administered land, or federal forest land, which can open up nearby access. Zoom out, turn on public land layers, and see where private parcels touch public blocks. Then confirm legal access — a parcel surrounded by public land may still lack a road easement. Our guide to vacant land searches covers access checks.
Tax-forfeited land
In Minnesota, land that goes tax-forfeit is held by the state and managed by the county. St. Louis County manages a large amount of tax-forfeited land and periodically offers parcels for sale. Buyers interested in those sales use Land Explorer to study a parcel’s location, access, and surroundings before bidding. Check the county’s land department for current sale lists and terms; the map helps you evaluate, not buy.
Lake lots, cabins, and shoreland rules
Lake property is the heart of the North Woods market. On the map, look at the shoreline, the lot’s depth from the water, and whether access comes by road or only by water. Minnesota shoreland rules set lot size, setback, and septic standards around lakes and rivers, and the county enforces them in the areas it zones. A parcel that looks buildable may have limited room once setbacks are applied. For a closer look at measuring lots, see measuring acreage in a parcel viewer.
How to find property lines on a North Woods lot
- Find the PIN in Land Explorer and note the legal description: a platted lot, or a section, township and range description.
- Pull the plat or deed from the Recorder, and check Survey Explorer for older surveys of the area.
- Look for the monuments on the ground. On lakeshore, the plat’s meander line isn’t the property line itself, so read the description carefully.
- Hire a Minnesota licensed surveyor before you build, clear or fence near a line.
Mineral rights and severed estates
On the Iron Range, mineral ownership can be separate from surface ownership, and the State of Minnesota and others hold mineral rights under many parcels. The parcel map describes surface ownership; whether minerals were severed is a title question. If you are buying acreage near mining areas, ask a title professional to check the mineral estate.
Is the St. Louis County GIS map accurate?
Close, but not survey-grade. Tax parcel lines up north are compiled from deeds, plats and the old Public Land Survey, and on forty-acre descriptions and lakeshore lots the drawn line can sit a noticeable distance from the ground. Deeds and plats are recorded with the St. Louis County Recorder, and the Assessor maintains valuations. A Minnesota licensed land surveyor sets boundaries, which matters a great deal on lake lots. Who uses Land Explorer
Cabin shoppers, hunters, tax-forfeit sale bidders, Duluth homebuyers, loggers and forest managers, mining-related professionals, surveyors, and title examiners. Out-of-state owners of inherited northern Minnesota land use it to confirm what they own.

Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or boundary disputes.
