What Is a Lot and Block System
Lot and block is a way to describe land by a lot number and a block number on a recorded plat.
Platbookmapper is an Amazon Associate. If you buy through an Amazon link on this page, we earn a commission. The link is a product, not the county map.
Instead of a long metes-and-bounds call, the deed says Lot 12, Block 3, of a named plat. The plat holds the shape and the measurements.
On the recorded sheet
The lot number is unique inside that plat, not inside the whole county. Always keep the subdivision name and the recording citation with the numbers.
The mix-up to avoid
Two subdivisions can both have a Lot 1. The plat name is what tells them apart.
Find the county map
The county GIS map is the practical place to start. Find it from the Platbookmapper directory, then treat the recorded plat and deed as the documents behind the picture.
Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey.
