What Is a Monument on a Plat
A monument is a physical mark the survey calls for: an iron pin, a pipe, a concrete marker, or a found corner.
Platbookmapper is an Amazon Associate. If you buy through an Amazon link on this page, we earn a commission. The link is a product, not the county map.
The plat's legend says which symbol is a set monument and which is a found one. The geometry is tied to those marks.
On the recorded sheet
If the monument is gone, the line is not gone. It is recovered from the remaining marks and the record.
The mix-up to avoid
A wooden stake from a builder is not a monument unless the plat called for it.
Find the county map
Search the county on the Platbookmapper home page. The directory links to the official parcel viewer. It does not draw the lots, and the line on the screen is an assessment map, not a survey.
Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey.
