Allegan County, Michigan GIS Parcel Map Guide
Allegan County runs from the Lake Michigan dunes at Saugatuck and Douglas inland to Otsego, Plainwell and Wayland, with farmland, lakes and the big Allegan State Game Area in between. The county’s free Parcel Viewer is the quickest way to look up land here. This guide covers the viewer, parcel numbers and local tips.

About Allegan County
The city of Allegan is the county seat, and the 2020 census counted 120,502 county residents. The county is part of the Holland micropolitan area. Cities include Allegan, Douglas, Fennville, Otsego, Plainwell, Saugatuck and Wayland, along with parts of Holland and South Haven. Hopkins and Martin are villages.
Land use changes quickly from west to east. The lakeshore draws vacation-home buyers to Saugatuck, Douglas and the dunes, including Saugatuck Dunes State Park. Fennville is known for orchards. Inland, the Allegan State Game Area covers more than 50,000 acres around Lake Allegan and the Kalamazoo River, a draw for hunters and anyone looking at land next to public ground. Two highways frame the market: I-196 runs near the lakeshore towns, while US-131 serves Wayland, Martin and Plainwell on the east side, where commuters to Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo look for homes and small acreage. That split shows up clearly in parcel sizes on the viewer, with small resort lots near the lake and larger farm tracts inland.
The county Parcel Viewer
Our directory points to Allegan County’s Parcel Viewer on the county’s ArcGIS portal. You can search by parcel ID, owner name or address, and it includes draw, select and print tools. A disclaimer notes that the data is for assessment and planning, not legal boundaries.
The county’s Equalization Department also runs a property records system with values and details. It explains that the data comes from local assessors after the March Board of Review, and the parcel maps reflect conditions as of December 31. A split finished in spring may not show until the next cycle.
Reading an Allegan parcel number
Allegan parcel numbers follow a pattern you can decode:
- A county code, 03, that is often left off.
- A two-digit unit code for the township or city: 01 through 24 are townships (01 is Allegan Township, 24 is Wayland Township), and 51 through 59 are cities, such as 51 for the City of Allegan, 54 for Otsego, 57 for Saugatuck and 59 for Douglas.
- A three-digit section or block number.
- A three-digit parcel number.
- A two-digit split code.
So 03 01 001 001 00 is a parcel in Allegan Township. Knowing the unit code tells you which local assessor to call, since Michigan assessments are handled by each township or city.

- Call the township or city assessor for current assessment questions.
Lake and river property
Lakefront and river parcels are common here, from Lake Michigan to inland lakes and the Kalamazoo. Parcel lines along water are approximate. Riparian rights, bottomland ownership and setbacks follow Michigan law and local rules, not the lines on a tax map. Our guide to whether property lines extend into the lake covers the basics. Along the lakeshore, ask the township about dune and shoreline rules before planning construction.
Hunting and rural land
Buyers looking at acreage next to the Allegan State Game Area can use the viewer to see where private land meets state ground, and hunters seeking permission on private parcels can identify owners. See our guide on finding landowners for hunting permission. Farmland buyers in the eastern townships should check road frontage, drains and wet areas on aerials before walking a property.
Tips for shoppers
Vacation-home buyers around Saugatuck and Douglas should look up the city or township’s rules on rentals, lot coverage and shoreline work before counting on rental income or an addition. Those rules are local, and the viewer will not show them. Farmland buyers should ask about county drains, since Michigan’s Drain Code gives county drain commissioners authority over established drains and can bring assessments to land in a drainage district. In the villages and small cities, compare the parcel with the recorded plat, because older lots sometimes carry odd shapes, alleys or shared driveways. And wherever you look, check that the owner named in the viewer matches the seller before you spend money on inspections.
Records and contacts
Deeds and plats are recorded with the Register of Deeds. The Equalization Department is at 3283 122nd Avenue in Allegan and can be reached at 269-673-0230. For boundaries, hire a licensed Michigan surveyor.

Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or boundary disputes.
