How GIS parcel maps work: finding property boundaries online
Understanding how GIS parcel maps work makes finding property boundaries online less mysterious: polygons in a database, attributes joined by key, and a web client that draws what the county published.

Layers and basemaps
Parcels sit above imagery or streets. Optional layers — zoning, floodplain, soils, city limits — help when you evaluate vacant industrial ground or river lots. Toggle thoughtfully; too many layers hide the fabric.
Attributes and keys
The parcel ID / PIN / UPI / APN links map geometry to CAMA assessment data. Copy that key; it survives better than a street label when you move between apps.
How often maps update
Cadastre edits lag deeds by days to months. Brand-new splits may not appear yet. If a closing just happened, call assessment or wait for the next publish cycle.
Practical finding tips
Bookmark the official viewer via Platbookmapper, search, verify the county name in the header (watch same-name counties in other states), then archive a screenshot with the date.
Not a survey. Web parcel maps are tax and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or disputes.
