Tooele County is huge and mostly empty, with a band of fast-growing towns on its east side. Old mining claims, military land, salt flats and new subdivisions all appear on the Tooele County GIS web app, which is one of the few county maps that can search by mining claim name.

The county’s GIS office publishes an Esri web app with a search box that goes well beyond the usual address lookup. You can search by parcel ID, address, road name, primary owner, any owner name or subdivision, and also by mineral survey number and mining claim name. Map credits note data from county GIS, the Recorder’s office and the state’s mapping agency. A header link opens the county’s online record search in a new window.
The opening notice states plainly that the maps are for representation only and not survey grade. We link the app from our Utah directory under Tooele; you can reach the same page from our all-states county map.
Parcel ID, owner, subdivision or claim
The parcel ID on your tax notice is the most direct search. Owner searches work for families and companies that hold several tracts, and they are often the only practical search for land far from paved roads. For historic mining ground around Ophir, Stockton and the Oquirrh foothills, the claim name or mineral survey number often finds a patented claim faster than any address. Tips:
- New lots in Stansbury Park, Erda and Grantsville may need the subdivision search before addresses are assigned.
- Remote parcels in the west desert have no street address at all; search by owner or parcel ID.
How to find property lines in Tooele County
- Click the parcel and record the legal description it lists.
- Use the Recorder’s public record search to view the deed, plats and recorded images. It requires a free registration.
- Look at each corner for a capped rebar or brass disk left by a surveyor.
- Call a Utah professional land surveyor before building near a line.
Tooele County combines the Recorder and the county Surveyor in one office, so recorded plats and survey records are held together. Utah land is described from the Salt Lake Base and Meridian.
Mining claims and mineral surveys
Patented mining claims are private land that began as federal mining claims, and they are often long, narrow parcels laid out along a vein rather than a tidy grid. Each was surveyed under a numbered mineral survey, which is why the app can search by that number. The Recorder also records notices for unpatented claims, which sit on federal land and do not convert the ground into private property. If you are looking at land in an old mining district, check which kind you are dealing with. The Utah State Archives holds historic mining indexes for deeper research.
Stansbury Park, Erda and Grantsville
Growth has pushed across the Oquirrh Mountains from the Salt Lake Valley. Stansbury Park and Lake Point have filled with subdivisions, Erda has shifted from farms to larger residential lots, and Grantsville has grown to the west. Water is the limiting factor. Utah water rights are separate from land, and new homes depend on a public system or a well right approved by the state. Ask where a lot’s water comes from before you buy, and whether any well right is approved for year-round household use.
Military and public land
Most of the county is federal, including large Bureau of Land Management areas, Dugway Proving Ground and Tooele Army Depot. The Great Salt Lake shore and the salt flats near Wendover add their own ownership quirks. The web app shows where private parcels end, which is useful for hunters and off-road users. Utah’s Division of Wildlife Resources sets hunting rules on public land.
Tooele County plat book
Tooele is not covered by any printed atlas we could find in circulation. Recorded plats and survey records at the Recorder’s office are the official versions, and the GIS app is free.
Is the Tooele County GIS map accurate?
The county says the lines are not survey grade, and that is especially true for old mining claims and remote desert tracts. Use the app to locate a parcel and its neighbors, then rely on a survey for boundaries, as our tax map and survey guide explains.

Frequently asked questions
Can I search Tooele County parcels by mining claim?
Yes. The GIS web app searches by mining claim name and by mineral survey number, along with parcel ID, owner and address.
Do I need an account to see Tooele County deeds?
The Recorder’s public record search asks you to register before viewing recorded images. The GIS app itself is open.
Is a patented mining claim private land?

Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or boundary disputes.
