Elko County is larger than several states and mostly federal land, with gold mines, ranches and a string of railroad towns along Interstate 80. The Assessor’s parcel viewer shows where the private pieces lie.

The Elko County parcel viewer

The viewer was built for the Assessor by a Nevada mapping firm and opens with a disclaimer: parcels are graphic representations only, not for measurement or boundary resolution, and the data changes often. After you accept, a left-side menu offers bookmarks, layers, legend, basemaps, zoom to places, measurement, print and a select parcels tool. A search bar sits at the top, and there is a light or dark theme toggle. It works best in a current browser.

The link lives on our Nevada page for Elko and in the county map.

The railroad checkerboard

When the Central Pacific Railroad was built across Nevada in the 1860s, the government granted it alternating square-mile sections for miles on each side of the line. Along the Interstate 80 corridor, that created a checkerboard of private and federal sections still visible on the parcel map. Owning one square often means your neighbor on every side is the Bureau of Land Management. Access across federal land may require a right of way.

How to find property lines in Elko County

The County Recorder in Elko holds deeds and maps. Rural land follows section lines, and many corners have not been visited by a surveyor in decades. Hire a Nevada professional land surveyor before fencing or building, especially on large tracts.

Our guide to land ownership maps helps sort public from private.

The Carlin Trend

Some of the richest gold deposits in North America lie along the Carlin Trend west of Elko. Large mining companies own or control huge areas, including patented and unpatented claims. Mining brings jobs and housing demand to Elko, Carlin and Spring Creek.

Spring Creek

South of Elko, Spring Creek is a large planned community with its own association, dues and rules. Many residents work at the mines.

Ruby Mountains and Lamoille

The Ruby Mountains rise to more than 11,000 feet southeast of Elko, and Lamoille Canyon, carved by glaciers, is a favorite scenic drive. Heli-skiing operates in winter. The small community of Lamoille, below the canyon, has ranches and homes on larger lots with mountain views. Most of the range is national forest, so private land there is limited and tends to sell at a premium.

Water rights

Nevada’s State Engineer manages water rights. Domestic wells are allowed within limits, and larger uses need a permit.

Railroad towns along I-80

Elko grew up as a railroad and ranching town and is now the region’s hub for mining companies, shopping and services. Its downtown still has Basque restaurants and hotels, reflecting the sheepherders who came from the Pyrenees in the late 1800s. Carlin, to the west, is tied to the mines and the railroad. Wells, to the east, sits where Interstate 80 meets U.S. 93. West Wendover, on the Utah line, draws gamblers from Salt Lake City with its casinos. Jackpot, on the Idaho line, does the same for travelers from the north.

Each of these places has a different land market. In Elko and Spring Creek, mine wages keep demand high. In Wells and Montello, prices are low but services are sparse. In West Wendover, the casinos and a small city grid dominate.

Ranches and grazing permits

Large ranches in Elko County often pair a modest amount of private deeded land, usually around water and hay meadows, with federal grazing permits covering far more acreage. The permits are not property in the usual sense and are not shown as parcels, but they often transfer with a ranch sale subject to agency approval. A buyer looking only at the parcel map may underestimate how much land a ranch actually uses. Ask for permit details, allotment maps and animal unit months from the seller.

Remote corners

Jarbidge, in the far north, is one of the most isolated towns in the lower 48, reached by long gravel roads. Mountain City and Owyhee lie near the Duck Valley Indian Reservation. Land in these places is cheap but can be snowbound for months, and utilities may be unavailable. The basemap and imagery layers help judge road conditions and terrain before you drive out.

The Cowboy Poetry Gathering, held in Elko each winter since the 1980s, is a reminder that ranching culture here is still strong.

Is the Elko County GIS map accurate?

The county’s disclaimer says the shapes are graphics, not a basis for measurement or settling boundaries, and the data changes often. On huge rural tracts with few monuments, a line on the map can be off by a surprising amount. Use the viewer to spot where private land sits among federal land, then confirm with a survey. Our note on searching by section, township and range helps with checkerboard descriptions.
