Free GIS parcel maps: find property boundaries online
Most U.S. counties publish a free GIS parcel map for day-to-day lookup. “Free” usually means view and search in the browser — not bulk GIS downloads, not a certified survey, and not always free owner reports.
Platbookmapper is an Amazon Associate. If you buy through an Amazon link on this page, we earn a commission. The link is a product, not the county map.
What free usually includes
Interactive map, address or parcel search, and basic attributes. Print/PDF of the map extent is common. Full shapefile or file geodatabase exports often sit behind an open-data portal, a request form, or a fee schedule.
Finding a free county map
Search engines mix official viewers with aggregator sites. Safer path: open Platbookmapper, click the county, and use Open local GIS when a curated URL exists.
When counties charge
Some assessment portals (for example certain ACT Datascout counties) gate detailed ownership and sketches behind a day pass. The GIS office may still sell countywide parcel layers separately. The map link and the paid report are different products.
Practical free workflow
Identify the parcel for free on the viewer, copy the tax ID, then decide whether you need paid assessor detail, recorder deeds, or a surveyor. Vacant commercial pads and rural acreage both follow that sequence.
Not a survey. Web parcel maps are tax and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or disputes.
