Limestone County, Alabama GIS Parcel Map Guide
Limestone County sits on the Tennessee River in north Alabama, between Huntsville’s western edge and the farm country toward the Tennessee line. It is one of the faster-changing counties in the state, and its free parcel viewer is the first stop for anyone researching homes, lots or acreage here.

About Limestone County
Limestone County was established on February 6, 1818, before Alabama became a state. Athens is the county seat, with 25,406 residents in 2020, and the county as a whole counted 103,570. It covers about 607 square miles and is part of the Huntsville metro area. Towns include Ardmore, Elkmont, Lester and Mooresville, and parts of Huntsville, Madison and Decatur extend into the county.
The Tennessee River forms the southern edge, with the Elk River entering from the north. Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge covers bottomland along the river. TVA’s Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant sits on Wheeler Lake in the county, and the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant has added jobs on the Huntsville side. Athens State University, in the county seat, is one of the oldest schools in the state.
The Revenue Commissioner’s office
In Limestone County, one office handles mapping, appraisal, assessment and collection. The Revenue Commissioner position combined the old assessor and collector roles, with the first commissioner elected in 1986 and taking office on October 1, 1987. G. Brian Patterson is the current Revenue Commissioner. So when you have a question about a parcel line, a value or a tax bill, it is the same office.
The Limestone County Parcel Viewer
Our directory links the county’s parcel viewer hosted by KCS. You can search by parcel number, owner name, address or subdivision. Aerial photos from 2025 and 2020 are available, and Street View links help you see road frontage. The terms of use prohibit automated scraping, so use it the normal way.
- Open the Limestone County Parcel Viewer.
- Choose a search type and enter a parcel number, owner, address or subdivision.
- Click the parcel for owner, acreage, legal description and value details.
- Switch between the 2025 and 2020 imagery to see new construction or clearing.
- Open Street View to check the road and entrance.
Comparing the two aerial years is especially useful here, because so much farmland has turned into subdivisions and industrial sites. A field on one image may be a street grid on the next.
For home buyers and builders
Buyers commuting to Huntsville often look at Athens, the Madison and Huntsville parts of the county, and the areas along I-65 and I-565. Use the subdivision search to find every lot in a neighborhood, and check the city limits, since some addresses fall in Huntsville or Madison while others are in the unincorporated county, which affects zoning, utilities and schools. Builders should confirm lot dimensions with the recorded plat at the Probate Office before designing a house.
For land, farm and hunting buyers
North of Athens toward Elkmont and Ardmore, larger tracts, row-crop farms and wooded land remain. Use the aerials to check field edges, creeks and tree lines, and click neighboring parcels to understand who owns the land around a tract. River and creek parcels near the Elk and Tennessee rivers may include floodplain, so check the FEMA map as well. Duck and deer hunters looking near Wheeler refuge should confirm refuge boundaries and rules before scouting. Our guide on finding landowners for hunting permission covers how to approach owners.
Also watch for access. A back tract without frontage may need a recorded easement; see how to tell if land is landlocked.
Reading a changing map
Fast growth means the parcel map changes often. New subdivisions are platted, farm tracts are split for homes and annexations move city lines. If a parcel you saw last month has a new number or shape, it may have been split. Our article Do parcel numbers change? explains why that happens. When in doubt, call the Revenue Commissioner’s mapping staff with the old number and the owner name.
Quick tips for Limestone searches
Subdivision search is the fastest way to study a new neighborhood, since it lists every lot and owner in one go. For rural land, the owner search often beats addresses, because many farm tracts have no house number. If a result looks wrong, check whether the parcel sits across a city line; some records show a Huntsville or Madison address even though the land is in Limestone County. And keep the county’s growth in mind when you compare values: a farm next to a new subdivision may be priced for development rather than for crops.
Records and surveys
Deeds and plats are recorded in the Limestone County Probate Office. The parcel viewer is for tax mapping and is not a survey, so use a licensed Alabama land surveyor for boundary lines, fences and new construction near a line.

Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or boundary disputes.
