Marinette County stretches from the shore of Green Bay up through forests and waterfalls to the Michigan border. Its Land Information Portal lets anyone look up parcels, run reports and browse the map.
The Land Information Portal
Marinette County’s portal is a web application with several ways in: a map view for browsing, a database view for searching records, queries for filtering parcels and a reports feature for printable summaries. The county recommends a current Chrome browser and notes that older Internet Explorer settings can cause trouble. The disclaimer is plain: the portal is a public information tool, not a survey, and users should not rely on it for legal boundaries.
Search by owner, address or parcel number, then switch between map and record views. Save a trip by using the Marinette link on our Wisconsin page or clicking the county on our county-level map.
How to find property lines in Marinette County
- Look up the parcel and copy its tax key number and legal description.
- Request deeds and certified survey maps from the Register of Deeds in Marinette.
- Northwoods lots often follow government lots along lakes and rivers, not neat squares.
- Hire a Wisconsin professional land surveyor before building, cutting timber or fencing.
Our GIS lot lines explainer shows why map lines can drift.
The Peshtigo Fire
On October 8, 1871, the same night as the Great Chicago Fire, a firestorm destroyed Peshtigo and surrounding settlements. It remains the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history, with estimates of more than a thousand deaths. The Peshtigo Fire Museum and cemetery preserve the story. Many rural land records restarted after the fire, and early surveys and deeds may have been lost.
Waterfalls and rivers
Marinette County promotes itself as a waterfall capital, with more than a dozen named falls on the Pike, Peshtigo and Thunder rivers. Many sit in county parks. The Peshtigo River has whitewater stretches and several hydroelectric flowages, including Caldron Falls and High Falls, whose shorelines hold cabins and homes. Waterfront lots follow state shoreland zoning, which sets setbacks and limits on clearing vegetation.
County forest and public land
Marinette County manages one of the largest county forests in Wisconsin, open to hunting, snowmobiling and timber harvest. State and federal land adds more public ground, including parts of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest nearby. Private cabins often border forest land, so check boundaries before building trails or deer stands. Our land ownership map guide helps sort public from private.
Managed Forest Law
Many private woodlots are enrolled in Wisconsin’s Managed Forest Law program, which lowers taxes in exchange for following a forest management plan. Some enrolled lands are open to public hunting and hiking, while closed enrollments are private. Withdrawal brings penalties. Ask the seller about enrollment and check the parcel record.
PFAS near Marinette and Peshtigo
Firefighting foam chemicals from a testing facility in Marinette have been found in groundwater and private wells in the Town of Peshtigo and surrounding areas. The responsible company has provided bottled water and treatment systems for some homes. If you are buying in the area, ask whether the well has been tested and review state environmental records.
The city of Marinette
Marinette sits at the mouth of the Menominee River across from Menominee, Michigan. Shipbuilding for the Navy and commercial customers anchors the waterfront. City lots follow older plats with alleys, and city zoning and permits apply.
Assessments and taxes
Wisconsin towns and cities each have assessors, and the county Treasurer collects taxes. Assessments are due January 1, and each municipality holds an open book and board of review.
Crivitz and the lake country
Around Crivitz, the Peshtigo River flowages and dozens of lakes such as Lake Noquebay draw summer residents from Milwaukee, Green Bay and Chicago. Older cabins sit on small shoreline lots platted decades ago, often with septic systems that predate current codes. Updating a cabin can trigger a sanitary permit review, so ask the county’s zoning and sanitation staff before planning an expansion.
Snowmobile and ATV trails
Hundreds of miles of snowmobile and ATV routes cross the county, many on county forest land but some over private parcels by landowner permission or recorded agreements. If a trail crosses land you plan to buy, find out whether the arrangement is a written easement or a year-to-year handshake.
Menominee River border land
The Menominee River forms the county’s eastern and northern border with Michigan. Parcels on the river may abut land in the other state, and a neighbor across the water answers to a different county and state. Dams along the river create flowages popular with anglers.
Is the Marinette County GIS map accurate?
The county says the portal is not a survey. Lake and river lots may be off by several feet. When a line matters, pay for a staked survey; here is what that tends to cost.

Not a survey. County GIS and tax parcel maps are assessment and planning layers. They are not a substitute for a recorded plat, deed, or licensed survey — especially for fences, setbacks, or boundary disputes.
